A Lifetime of Good Beginnings

Stories Exploring Promise

By Andrew Phillips Grannell | Publisher: North Deering Pond Press

About the book

The core of these stories pivots on meeting and asking Dorothy Ann Stempel for her hand in marriage in the autumn of 1965. Forming a partnership in joint ministry has taken us into several pioneering adventures including transracial adoption, reform of courts, negotiating native people's rights, nuclear disarmament, and constructing an earthbermed and solar passive home.

My first encounters with Quakers quickly drew me in. There at Earlham College (19631965), I witnessed extraordinary commitments to taking direct action in the pursuit of social justice and peace. If there was one experience more than any other that challenged me, it was that hot July night's stumbling and stunning exposure to my father's working conditions. Both of these experiences Earlham and my father's working conditions moved me rapidly into the arenas of committed action.

When you work as led, with a dedicated and talented few by taking the long view you may discover that you have been participating in a number of good and promising beginnings. Good beginnings are seldom recognized as such. They are nearly always messy and difficult. Definitely challenging. We need partners to accomplish anything in this life. In fact, we need action tested teams and good teamwork.

These stories seek to identify those gracefilled opportunities that offered me a chance to take the lead on several important teams. There was no better team than the one I enjoyed as I learned how to serve the Earlham School of Religion as Dean (19911998). During these often trying years, we worked to bring two very different theological schools into a long term and committed partnership while working to triple the endowment.
